from quebec, with love is the first ep from sleazy, a project from stacy boudreault (marie davidson) and sam paquette (ginger breaker). an ode to the rural and suburban quebec experience, sleazy is the progenitor of suburban techno. sleazy made their recorded debut in april 2017 with the single que calor, released as a limited edition cassette at a party headlined by helena hauff in montreal. described by npr as equal parts inviting and menacing and pitchfork as playful and sensual music made for the family home s basement a soundtrack for all the salacious discoveries one might make in that damp, dark incubator.

there is a long-standing love affair between dj harvey and pikes, ibiza. as well as coming back for his third consecutive �mercury rising� residency, the legendary �djs� dj has been appointed �cultural attaché� for pikes, meaning his magic touch and feel-good presence will create even more special moments at pikes this summer, including the launch of new label, pikes records.
in 2015 dj harvey made his hugely anticipated return to ibiza and made pikes his home for his mercury rising debut, a concept inspired by the beauty of the real ibiza, the incredible history of pikes and a genuine love for music. the love, the dancing, the music and the balearic spirit perfectly and poetically encapsulated by dj harvey has seen mercury rising widely recognised as the most special night to embrace the island in over a decade.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin� records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called �fairy godmother of house� abigail adams, movin�s first output was �i�ve got the music� by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up �jersey jams� that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin� records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin� records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve �lucky� benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line �i love this place�. the �place of worship� mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

in 1980, during her run on broadway in the musical, ain�t misbehavin� and before being cast in dreamgirls, singer/actress and detroit native roz ryan teamed up with the legendary team of dennis coffey and mike theodore on a six song album that wound up being unreleased. recently, the folks at super disco edits released this 45 featuring roz� taking on preston glass� �keep shining� b/w �put love back� (composed by eric mcclinton). both tracks were from the theo-coff sessions and make their debut for lovers of dancin� (�keep shining�) and romancin� (�put love back�). enjoy!

drummer and music producer desmond mahoney is another of the unsung heroes of british reggae. born in jamaica, he moved to the uk in 1967 and began his professional career playing drums in a band called young ones from zion. he was a founding member of black slate when the group formed in 1974, played with them through their glory years and after running a sound system in north london for many years, returned to the fold when the group reformed a few years ago. his first foray in music production probably came during a brief period in toronto in 1978, working with a band called the ishan lions, but he was back in the uk in time for black slate�s breakthrough material, which brought them onto ensign in the uk, barclay in france and alligator in the usa. at the same time, he continued to arrange and produce for a number of british reggae artists operating in both the roots and lover�s rock modes, female duo nya & natty�s �one love stylee� seemed to bridge the two styles quite successfully on this greatly sought-after 12-inch, first issued in 1981 on the s&g label, then based at a record shop in bow.

>lost in love< is the first single to be taken from l-vis 1990s forthcoming debut album, neon dreams. continuing a collaborative partnership which began on last years >forever you< single, breakthrough bristol-based vocalist javeon mccarthy once again takes centre stage here. through its melodious analogue synths, infectious vocal hooks and sub-4 minute running length, >lost in love< in many ways serves as the ideal entrée to neon dreams. this is the sound of l-vis 1990 revisiting the routes of his dance music love affair. picking up his own theme from the original�the classic french bassline�l-vis 1990s neon dreams club mix pushes the low-end triumphantly to the fore. club is certainly the operative word here, feel the remixs bangalter-esque bassline drop and your minds eye fixes instinctively upon an undulating dancefloor. the night slugs allstars � l-vis 1990, bok bok, jam city � also take the floor on their version, albeit via the neon-tinged scenic route. much like the label itself, their remix is replete with colour, difficult to define and relentlessly innovative.

eddie parker cut his northern soul anthems �i�m gone� and �love you baby� indetroitin the late 60s, showing there was life after pied piper for jack ashford and lorraine chandler. intense energy, grit and soul are the hallmarks of these seminal sides.

the checkerboard squares� �double cookin�� is a byword for the northern soul all-nighters of the 70s, when hundreds of dancers would hit the beat and clap in unison to the spirited instrumental. our discovery of two vocal versions of the song shook the rare soul world in the noughties. here we feature the tandels� all-girl take on a song they had previously recorded to a more basic arrangement on the obscure jam-cha label.

two more recent 70s, modern soul-style discoveries were issued last year on the �hotlanta soul 4� kent cd. lorraine johnson verified that the sumptuous vocals on �a love like yours� were indeed hers, though again the author of the song is unknown. deep velvet give a much more harmonious take on ripple�s �complain to the clouds�, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song.

we have already released the longer version of the northern classic �gone with the wind is my love�, but this kent 45 of rita & the tiaras� masterpiece is the first time we have issued the doré single as it was originally put out. on the flip is the glorious instrumental version for lovers of that la orchestral soul sound.
